We rescue retired racing greyhounds from a fate of euthanasia
while still in the prime of their life. These racers were discarded because they
run too slow by fractions of a second. We entrust each dog to a team of 2
handlers for 3 months. At least one loving, responsible handler is with them
24/7. Dog handlers pass a rigid prequalification process. Inmates receive
specialized training. IPG prison volunteers meet with them regularly to
check on the progress of the dog and handlers. Meanwhile, a team of IPG
volunteers and staff work beyond the razor wire to locate a “forever home” for
each prison greyhound. The inmate dog handler learns patience, responsibility,
job skills, and teamwork. This program gives the inmate an opportunity to find
the hero within themselves. They describe their greyhounds as the “death row
dogs” that have been given a second chance, just like this program has given
them. The training and socialization that the dogs receive thru this foster care
greatly increases the desirability and retention of greyhounds in their new
adoptive homes.
Indy Prison Greyhounds
operates under the umbrella of Animal Protection League. Maleah Stringer is
President of the Indiana Chapter. We do not seek to replace or compete with
other greyhound rescue organizations, but to operate in our own prison niche for
the cause of saving more greyhounds. We appreciate any organization that is
helping greyhounds find homes. There are still far too many greyhounds being
destroyed each week.
